Join DAMA-RMC for two presentations to strengthen your analytic toolsets. Scot Reagin will present some useful and practical "Data Engineering Techniques" to prepare data for analysis and share how those techniques can be used to improve the quality of analytics/data science. Followed by featured presenter, Bill Inmon, who will show us step-by-step how to do text analytics simply, quickly, and inexpensively with with textual ETL and "Text Analytics Simplified"

Text Analytics Simplified with Bill Inmon

    • Everyone has text. But no one uses text very much in decision making, at least not like they use structured data. And that’s a shame, because there is a tremendous amount of information wrapped in the form of text. In the past, when people have tried to do text analytics the results have been gruesome. Typically, text analytics turns into an expensive, never ending academic exercise run by high priced consultants that never seem to arrive at the point of delivering business value The well educated and expensive consultants rarely achieve the great business value that you were hoping for. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
    • TEXT ANALYTICS SIMPLIFIED shows you step by step how to do text analytics simply, quickly, and inexpensively. With textual ETL you can go from raw text to a data base to an analytical visualization in the text in a few hours. And anyone can do it! Bill founded ForestRim Technology Forest Rim Technology, a company that applies and implements data warehousing solutions executed through textual disambiguation and TextualETL.

Data Engineering Techniques with Scot Reagin

    • Our Data’s all good, really. Nothing to see here.
    • Accessing large amounts of raw data shifts the burden of Data Engineering to the Analyst which is not necessarily a key skill. But, some easy to employ techniques of cleansing, filtering, relating and modeling raw data can significantly improve the quality and validity of analytic results.
    • Historically data reporting and analysis have been dependent upon formal, complex, and often too slow to respond data warehousing solutions. While these solutions remain core capabilities of Data Management (hopefully, less the too slow part) contemporary Data Analysts and Data Scientists require access to more data – raw data – bypassing Data Management processes. This is a good thing, but there’s a gap.
    • Data is messy; it’s incomplete, inconsistent and sometimes inaccurate but that doesn’t mean it’s not unusable. With some simple techniques it’s possible to improve the quality of your data and the analysis that data support. And you don’t have to be a Data Engineer to do it.
    • BIOScot Reagin’s technology career spans the entire history of what we now think of as Business Intelligence. Starting with software he developed for mini-computers in the early 1980’s to the first Cube technologies of the 1990’s and Self-Service BI and contemporary Predictive Analytics Scot has designed and implemented data solutions for a wide variety of organizations. In addition to Consulting Scot has created and delivered public and private courseware on many Business Intelligence topics and his ability to tie and clarify the technical aspects of a solution to business value have made him a popular speaker at business and technical conferences.
